The Mesquite Police Department is making strides to enhance community safety with a gun buyback initiative aimed at taking unwanted firearms out of circulation.
In a recent social media post, the department unveiled details of the upcoming event where individuals can hand over firearms, no questions asked, and in return receive gift cards. "Every firearm turned in, is one less firearm that can be used in a violent offense or accidental incident," according to the Mesquite Police Department. This initiative represents one of many efforts to curb gun violence and accidents by removing the means for such events from the grasp of potential perpetrators, whether through malice or mishap.
The event is scheduled on Saturday from 8 am to 11 am at the Mesquite Arena. Participants are instructed to bring firearms unloaded and stored in the trunk of their vehicle for a drive-up transaction, ensuring a safe handover for all parties involved.
Compensation for firearms will be on a first-come, first-serve basis with the police offering, "$100 per handgun" and "$150 per long gun / or privately manufactured firearm" according to the Mesquite Police Department. Mesquite Police personnel, also reserve the right to refuse any firearm not definable by ATF standards. Those interested in partaking are encouraged to act swiftly, as the number of available gift cards is limited.
