Residents and visitors to Mesquite, Texas, adjusting their budgets for electric vehicle (EV) charging must take note that from November 1, the city's free ride comes to a decisive end. The City of Mesquite has announced a newly imposed fee at its public EV charging stations, setting the rate at 30 cents per kWh, a move aimed at sustaining the infrastructure beyond the lifespan of its initial federal funding. This cost is notably below the Texas state average of 50 cents per kWh, as outlined in a report by Stable Auto.
Over the past 14 months, the city has capitalized on a federal grant from the Texas Department of Transportation, part of the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement program, it allowed for the installation of three dual-port Level II EV chargers at various locations and thus, free EV charging was extended to the public in efforts to promote eco-friendly transit options. The Municipal Center located at 1515 N. Galloway Ave., flaunts two EV chargers with the juice to serve four vehicles simultaneously, while the City Hall at 757 N. Galloway Ave. houses a single charger equipped for two vehicles.
Transitioning to a user-paid system signals a new phase in the city's commitment to environmental adjustments, with Mesquite taking pragmatic strides to evolve into a municipality conscious of both the economic and ecological landscapes.
