Meta, the tech conglomerate that owns popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has begun another wave of layoffs affecting its workforce across various departments. The layoffs have touched on areas including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, as reported by The Verge. The downsizing actions appear to be part of internal reorganizations rather than a widespread reduction throughout the company.

Several Meta employees have publicly expressed their departure from the company. Among the dismissed is Jane Manchun Wong, a notable engineer known for revealing unannounced app features before her Meta tenure, who joined the Threads team in 2023. "Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy," a company spokesperson, Dave Arnold, stated in comments shared with The Verge. These alterations involve relocating some teams to various locations and reassigning some employees to different roles. In cases where a role is eliminated, Meta strives to find alternate opportunities within the company for those impacted.

Ex-employees from the company have shared news of their layoffs on social media, noting departures not just within flagship apps but also from sectors such as Facebook's legacy platform, recruiting, legal operations, and design, as observed in posts cited by TechCrunch. A Meta spokesperson specified to TechCrunch that no layoffs impacted Threads, recruiting, and legal operations with the recent reorganization. However, detailed disclosures regarding the precise scale of the layoffs and the specific departments involved have not been forthcoming from Meta.

According to TechCrunch, some employees were given a choice between alternative positions within the company or opting for a severance package. A sizeable number chose the latter. Speaking anonymously, a former Meta staffer told TechCrunch that more than a dozen team members were informed about the termination of their roles through video calls last Wednesday. Additionally, the Financial Times has suggested that some employees were let go for misusing company-provided meal credits to purchase non-food items. This follows a pattern of rightsizing at Meta, which has seen the company executing significant layoffs to recalibrate after a hiring surge during the pandemic. The company has laid off thousands in the past two years, with Meta's Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, accepting responsibility for the 2022 reductions.
