A Metro Detroit power couple not only overcame their injury setbacks but also shared a double victory at the 2024 Detroit Free Press Marathon, becoming the talk of the town. Andy Bowman took first place in the men's division with a time of 2:17:47, while his wife, Sydney Devore, won the women's division at 2:42:46.
"It definitely meant a lot today, especially to do it with my wife, it means everything," Bowman said in an interview with WWJ Newsradio. Both seasoned runners, the couple's victory came as an emotional climax after a season affected by injuries. Just before taking their respective crowns, the athletic duo found support in each other's successes throughout the challenging course. These wins add to their impressive running resumes, which include previous marathon victories and Olympic trials qualifications.
Contrary to any doubts that might have besetted them, given the injuries they sustained at a trail race earlier in the season, the couple maintained a positive approach. "That whole last four miles I was like, 'He’s waiting for you, he’s waiting for you,’" Devore told The Detroit News. Their story isn't just about mutual support; it's a testament to their sheer determination in facing physical and mental challenges head-on.
Apart from their personal triumphs, the Bowmans expressed a strong affection for the Detroit marathon, urging people of all skill levels to participate. "Walk/run it; find a way. There is nothing like seeing Detroit come alive like today," Devore-Bowman stated in a CBS News Detroit interview. Thanks to their training, which includes keeping up with two high-energy German Shorthaired Pointers, the runners were in peak form to tackle the marathon.
After the exhausting run, the victory was not only a personal achievement but also shared with their local run club in their hometown. Both runners are no strangers to the competitive circuit, with Bowman having recently won a marathon in Pittsburgh and Devore boasting multiple marathon appearances, including in New York and Boston. Their wins in Detroit, however, marked a particularly significant moment as they demonstrated their athletic prowess on a local level. Bowman grew up in Michigan and is an alum of Oakland University, while Devore’s running journey began back in her Florida high school, earning her stripes as a University of Florida runner before turning professional.
Bowman and Devore plan to continue their running season with upcoming races, as Devore said they are set to participate in a 10-mile race in Pittsburgh followed by another marathon in California, according to CBS News Detroit.
