A Mexican national has been sentenced to a decade in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to armed drug trafficking and the illegal re-entry into the United States, federal authorities announce. Mauricio Villalpando-Gaytan, 34, faced a five-count indictment, which included charges of armed drug trafficking and re-entry after removal.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida reported that Villalpando-Gaytan was involved in selling cocaine and possessed a firearm during drug trafficking. He sold cocaine to an undercover officer in Okeechobee County on two occasions. On January 28, he sold $100 worth of cocaine, and the next day, while armed with a pistol, he attempted to sell a kilogram of cocaine to the same officer.

The investigation and subsequent prosecution were a collaborative effort between the DEA Miami Field Division and the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office. U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore handed down the sentence, with the case prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Breezye Telfair. Asset forfeiture was managed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabrielle Raemy Charest-Turken.

After his arrest, it was revealed that Villalpando-Gaytan had previously been deported from the U.S. and had illegally reentered the country. U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe and DEA Special Agent in Charge Deanne L. Reuter emphasized their commitment to prosecuting drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession. More details and court documents can be found on the Southern District of Florida's court website or on PACER using case number 24-cr-14008.
