Miami-Dade County residents have a fresh opportunity to adopt solar power thanks to the launch of the 2024 Solar Co-op by the group Solar United Neighbors (SUN). According to a Miami-Dade County press release, this initiative is aimed at homeowners, non-profits, and small businesses interested in reducing energy costs and contributing to a greener community.

Laura Tellez, Associate Florida Program Director for Solar United Neighbors, highlighted the benefits of the new co-op, stating, “The Co-op will enable Miami-Dade County homeowners, nonprofits and small businesses to join the growing community of people saving money by harnessing local solar power. Placing consumer protection at the forefront, we help those looking to go solar navigate the process with their best interest and needs being prioritized.” This initiative also supports Miami-Dade County's Climate Action Strategy, which aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, as explained by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

Miami-Dade's partnership with Solar United Neighbors includes organizations like the Leon Lowenstein Foundation, Catalyst Miami, and the NAACP South Dade Branch, all working to offer accessible solar options. Co-op members will choose a solar installer through a competitive bidding process, securing discounts and encouraging the switch to renewable energy.

Pam Brown-Eyo, NAACP South Dade Branch Environmental and Climate Justice Chair, said, “SUN was right there with us to answer questions and provide advice.” Additionally, joining the co-op doesn't require members to make a purchase, allowing potential solar users the freedom to learn and explore their options.

For those interested in learning more or joining the Co-op, free information sessions are scheduled for the coming months, with details available on the SUN’s events page. The sessions include Florida Solar 101 meetings at West Kendall Library on November 21 and South Dade Regional Library on January 15, and virtual meetings on December 10 and February 11 for 'Energía Solar 101 en Florida'.

Solar United Neighbors advocates for fair solar policies and an informed solar community through various programs and educational efforts.
