In a report by The Detroit News, these figures are consistent with those of a month ago and demonstrate a 22-cent dip compared to the same period last year.
The cost of refilling a 15-gallon tank now averages about $49, giving Michigan motorists a respite from the pump and, representing a roughly $9 saving from the peak prices of August 2023. "Despite an increase in demand, Michigan gas prices continue to decline across the state," Adrienne Woodland, a spokesperson for AAA explained. "If demand reverses course, drivers could see gas prices continue to drop," a statement obtained by CBS Detroit.
In Metro Detroit, however, prices are slightly higher at an average of $3.40 per gallon, which is approximately 3 cents less than last week’s average and 7 cents lower than the same time last year, as mentioned in the coverage by WNMU-FM. Across the state, the most expensive gas prices can be found in Metro Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Marquette, while Benton Harbor, Saginaw, and Grand Rapids.

This downturn, according to The Detroit News, is occurring despite concerns that global events, such as Iran's recent attack on Israel, could potentially affect gas prices. Yet, a combination of falling oil prices, increased gasoline production reported by the EIA, and recovery operations in areas like Florida, indicate the possibility of further decreases in the weeks ahead.
Meanwhile, AAA offers practical advice to drivers looking to stretch their fuel budgets further, such as combining errands, opting for cash payments at gas stations that charge extra for credit card use, removing excess vehicle weight, and driving conservatively. For additional savings, they suggest enrolling in rewards programs like Shell's Fuel Rewards, where AAA members can save an added 5 cents per gallon. These tips, provided by the CBS Detroit report, aim to ease the financial burden of gas expenses amid fluctuating prices.
