In a disturbing incident out of Cass City, Michigan, a 19-year-old man posed as a 14-year-old on Snapchat and managed to deceive a family, leading to the sexual assault of two young girls. Ethan R. Dekalita was arrested after Michigan State Police conducted an investigation that revealed his true age and intentions.

It was reported by ClickOnDetroit that Dekalita befriended the 14-year-old victim on the social media platform and represented himself as a minor which then convinced her to invite him to her house. He extended his visit by falsely claiming a family emergency and persuaded the girl's parents to allow him to stay overnight. However, it was over subsequent days that the parents grew suspicious, unable to verify his backstory, and turned to authorities for help.

The state police arrived at a worrying scene where it quickly became clear that the individual in question was not a 14-year-old boy in distress, but rather a 19-year-old man with deceitful motives. According to FOX 2 Detroit, upon his arrest, Dekalita was arraigned on Sept. 11, facing charges that include second-degree sex crimes, accosting a minor, and assault and battery.

Huron Daily Tribune reported that in light of this incident, Michigan State Police have been advising parents to more closely monitor their children's use of social media. The MSP Computer Crimes Unit also recommended parents to actively speak to their children about the safe usage of the internet, offering resources through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the MSP ICAC Task Force for additional support.
