Members of the Michigan State Police (MSP) are rallying around each other not just for law enforcement matters but also for battling personal health crises—they've formed a cancer support group known as "No One Fights Alone" (NOFA). This initiative is particularly poignant during Breast Cancer Awareness Month when pink ribbons flourish. According to a report by the Michigan State Police Newsroom, the group's inception was inspired mainly by two MSP members' confrontations with the disease.

Kim Dowling, an MSP photographer, faced her unexpected diagnosis at 37 with two aggressive breast tumors, igniting a whirlwind of medical consultations and the start of a battlefield she didn't envision being on; her story is a testament to the harrowing speed cancer inflicts on one's life, leading her from routine to radiology in just days. The creation of NOFA also saw Cindy Homant, a technology specialist with a family history of cancer and her victory against colon cancer, lending support, “The mental aspect sticks with you even after treatment ends,” she said, as detailed by MSP Newsroom, outputting her experience into the support group whose first meeting convened in September, aiming to offer solace beyond the physical afflictions that cancer brings.

Integral to the ethos of NOFA is the belief that no MSP member should navigate the cancer journey solo, affirming a commitment to provide an empathetic ear and a meaningful understanding of the demands that cancer places on the lives of employees and their families. Dowling emphasized the significance of this support network, stating, "Our hope is to provide a listening ear and safe space for MSP members to talk about cancer, both for those facing it and others who want to support them," according to the MSP Newsroom.

Beyond their support circle, NOFA members have launched an internal donation drive for October, focusing on accumulating chemotherapy care items to comfort those entrenched in the ongoing fight against cancer.
