Michigan's dedication to aiding those affected by Hurricane Helene's wrath continued as Michigan Task Force One and the Michigan National Guard were deployed to assist in the relief and rescue operations in North Carolina and South Carolina, respectively. The task force, renowned for their water rescue capabilities, returned home this Friday after a week-long mission where, according to WWMT, they were instrumental in search and rescue operations, tallying 26 rescues, including two fellow Michiganders.
Underscoring the challenge faced by Michigan Task Force 1 during their operation, The leaders described the situation as one wrought with obstacles, "There (were) areas of just complete destruction," Nate Herr from the Southfield Fire Department stated, per CBS Detroit, reminiscing about houses and landscapes irrevocably altered, "Where houses once stood, the home was completely gone, and 20 feet of dirt underneath it completely washed away as well." The Task Force's journey was far from trivial, navigating through treacherous waterways and clearing paths where nature's fury had rendered them impassible.
The Michigan National Guard also joined the relief efforts, with 40 soldiers from the 1436th Engineer Company and 507th Engineer Battalion being called upon to clear the debris-riddled roads of South Carolina, according to The Detroit News. Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised the efforts of those involved, affirming, "Michiganders are tough, and we always help those in need. " In her statement, she emphasized the spirit of service endemic to the state's residents.
