As the flicker of jack-o'-lanterns wanes and the echoes of trick-or-treaters fade into another Halloween night's memory, the City of Minneapolis offers a sustainable solution for disposing of our festive gourds and carved pumpkins. Residents are encouraged to deposit these holiday remnants into their green organics recycling carts, sans the decorative candles and lights, for a more environmentally friendly end to their seasonal life cycle, according to the City's latest guidelines.
While the city makes strides towards comprehensive waste management, not all Halloween waste is destined for the green bin. Those Jack-o'-lanterns, shining beacons of Halloween spirit, smeared with the gleeful strokes of acrylic paint, or etched with the indelible marks of Sharpies, are exempt from the salvation of compost and must reside in the grave of the black garbage cart.
For the green-thumbed and eco-conscious individuals who haven't yet registered for the organics recycling program, there's still a way to unite your festive gourds with the Earth from whence they came. Carved pumpkins and other gourds can be grouped with your other yard waste, ensuring they still play a role in the cycle of life and sustainability that defines our shifting environmental stewardship ethos.
