Gunshots rang out at an unauthorized party early Saturday morning in Minneapolis, drawing a swift response from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD). According to a post shared on the social media page of Ward 9 Council Member Jason Chavez, the incident took place at approximately 3:31 AM at a Lake Street property. Callers reported a dispute which soon escalated into gunfire at 3318 East Lake Street.
An after-hours party was in full swing when MPD officers arrived on the scene, Chavez's statement detailed. The city's Business Licensing team has also been involved, noting the absence of a proper license for business or liquor sales at the location. Previously, the city had issued a violation for extended business hours in August, and the same site has been officially warned with placards not once, but on two separate occasions. Despite previous warnings, and efforts by Business Licensing to work with the property owner, the tenants responsible for the unauthorized events have persisted.
The chaos from the unauthorized gathering has led to neighborhood concern and disruption, prompting city officials to take further action. Chavez expressed his stance clearly, "It is unacceptable that families, children and residents had to experience or even hear this happening." The property owner, having failed at voluntary eviction attempts, has initiated the formal court process to evict the uncooperative tenants, with the support of city officials. The Sheriff's department is slated to enforce the eviction next week, as part of the court's directive.
