The Minneapolis Police Department is ramping up efforts to encourage gun safety among its residents with a new initiative that focuses on the safe storage of firearms. Not just a best practice, appropriately securing guns is mandated by law in Minnesota. The MPD's Crime Prevention Specialists have taken to the streets, armed not with weapons but with informational fliers, intent on educating both businesses and neighborhood groups on responsible firearm storage.
According to a recent social media post by the Minneapolis Police Department, guns should always be stored unloaded and locked away in a cabinet, safe, gun vault or storage case. For added security, a gun lock, which prevents the firearm from being fired, is also recommended. This call to action by the MPD emphasizes how the responsibility for preventing gun accidents and theft falls upon every gun owner.
The initiative also touches on guidelines for transporting firearms in vehicles. Firearms must be unloaded, encased specifically for weapons, and if no permit to carry is held, kept in a closed trunk while on the move. The clear message is that even when not in use, firearms warrant cautious handling and strict adherence to safety protocols.
Per the directive of the Minneapolis Police Department, "If you have a permit to carry, your firearm should be stored as described when not in use." The law is straightforward, underscoring that whether at home, in business, or en route, the onus is on permit carriers and gun owners alike to ensure their weapons are secured. Through education and community outreach, the MPD hopes to foster a safer environment for all Minneapolis citizens. By spreading the word about safe storage, they are targeting the root of potential firearm-related incidents before they can occur.
