Over a year into the implementation of Minneapolis' Downtown Late Night Safety Plan, a new initiative appears to have temporarily quelled the outbreak of youth violence in the city's nightlife hub. According to a bulletin from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), the past weekend saw no significant violent incidents downtown, a stark contrast to the violence seen on recent weekends. This achievement follows a curfew operation and the bolstering of partnerships between law enforcement and community groups.

The operational strategy included briskly enforcing curfew laws with a task force made up of MPD's Juvenile Investigations Division, various law enforcement agencies, and a coalition of community partners such as 21 Days of Peace and A Mother's Love. The task force engaged with 49 juveniles before curfew, and interventions saw a diminishing need each night, from 24 on Friday to just nine come Sunday. “I am pleased with the successful efforts to impact juvenile activity downtown after curfew,” Chief O’Hara told the Minneapolis Police Department. He articulated the essential role of the community saying, “The combined effort of officers working with community members is the model of what is going to work moving forward. You can’t have successful community safety without the involvement of the community.”

The weekend's protocol initiated with a community roll call at the Hennepin County Library, where police and partners aligned their strategies and focus zones. As the evening protracted and curfew hours set in, the task force shifted to assist with broader safety and law enforcement efforts in the downtown vicinity.

Attention was also directed toward families with juveniles who had found themselves repeatedly in police contact, an effort to proactively ensure the welfare of youngsters at risk. By addressing potential conflict before it could evolve into violence, MPD believes it has found a sustainable approach to fostering peace.
