In a solemn nod to public service and sacrifice, Governor Mike Parson has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across St. Charles County and at all Missouri emergency medical stations today. The tribute stands to honor the memory of Michael R. Clarke, a paramedic with the St. Charles County Ambulance District, who tragically passed away in the line of duty.
The governor’s announcement came via a press release, outlining the reasons to solemnly commemorate Clarke’s service and dedication. “Paramedic Michael Clarke loved working as a paramedic, had compassion for the people he treated, and was honored earlier this year for saving the life of a patient in cardiac arrest,” Governor Parson said. To fully appreciate his commitment, it's instrumental to note that Clarke stepped into his paramedic shoes recently, having obtained his license on September 30, 2022.
Clarke’s career was cut short after only two years on the job when he was found unresponsive in an ambulance district bedroom early in the morning on October 11. Despite the attempts of his colleagues to rapidly resuscitate him, Clarke was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His premature death at the age of 27 underscores not only personal loss but also the broader, often unseen, perils emergency responders face.
Expressions of condolences and sympathy are being extended to Clarke's family and friends, in light of their unfathomable loss. Governor Parson and his wife Teresa have publically shared their prayers for “Paramedic Clarke’s parents, siblings, and all who loved him.”
