Montgomery County law enforcement made a significant move against organized crime with the arrest of eight individuals linked to a spate of burglaries across the county and beyond, with the suspects being part of what's been dubbed the "Roma crew." The arrests occurred after diligent surveillance and coordinated response by multiple police district teams intercepted the crew in the act on Essex View Drive, a site of previous burglaries, and at another location on Garnkirk Forest Drive in Clarksburg—both operations executed with the kind of precision that speaks to the strengthening of inter-departmental collaborations.
According to a report from Montgomery County Police Department, the break in the case came about after officers located vehicles linked to the crew near previously targeted properties, the ensuing stakeout leading to a second observed burglary; this set the stage for the subsequent arrest of the suspects at a WaWa store located, the coordinated effort showcased the police's proactive approach extended beyond Montgomery to include Baltimore County and other affected jurisdictions.
Those placed under arrest include seven individuals who were transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, with roles within the crew ranging from apparent lookouts to those believed to play more central roles in the actual burglaries. The individuals in custody are Mercedesa Iordache, aged 50, Titina Sardaru, 57, Lorena Enache, 37, Flavius Stoican, 44, Dumitru Velcu, 29, Denisa Chiciu, 29, and Anisoara Iordache, 54; there is also an unnamed female suspect, currently hospitalized, and her identity and condition have yet to be disclosed.
The sweeping operation was far from an isolated endeavor—it was the result of cumulative efforts of various dedicated units including K9 squads, community action teams, and detective bureaus, which is perhaps indicative of the kind of tightened nets law enforcement is increasingly able to cast against organized crime networks at large, as this network, suspected to be of Romanian origin, had rooted itself across multiple counties, illustrating the importance and necessity of such comprehensive law enforcement strategies.
