In the early hours of this morning, a tragic incident unfolded on the H-1 freeway near Kalihi. A 44-year-old man lost his life in a motorcycle crash that led to the westbound closure of the highway near the airport, as per KITV.
According to KITV, the Honolulu Police Department received a distressing 9-1-1 call just past 1 a.m., and the man was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services. Traveling at high speeds, the man is reported to have lost control, "struck a guardrail, and was thrown onto the roadway," said police.
While the exact factors contributing to the crash remain under investigation, it was suggested by officers that speed played a significant role. As recorded by KHON2, the motorcyclist, while speeding, "lost control, traveled into the shoulder lane, crashed and was ejected onto the roadway."
Although the identity of the man was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin, it is confirmed that this accident marks the 36th traffic-related fatality on Oahu this year, as reported by KITV. Authorities are continuing their inquiry, and unclear still it remains whether drugs or alcohol also played a part in the fatal outcome.
