California State Parks is preparing for controlled burns at Mount Diablo State Park to promote healthier ecosystems, reduce wildfire risks, and manage invasive species. The prescribed burns are scheduled between October 28 and December 13, but weather and air quality conditions will ultimately determine the timing. The burns will be rescheduled if conditions aren't right, according to California State Parks.

Up to 104 acres around the Mitchell Canyon area will be affected, with temporary closures to certain hiking trails and facilities. Access from Regency Drive will be closed, and the Mitchell Canyon parking lot will have limited space. Trails like Bruce Lee Road and Coulter Pine Trail will be off-limits during the burns, but most parks remain open. Nearby residents may notice smoke, but it is part of the carefully planned burns coordinated with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

For more information, a meeting will be held at the Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center on October 18 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Updates will be available on the Mount Diablo State Park prescribed burn webpage, the California State Parks website, and their Facebook page.
