The community of Mount Juliet is in mourning after the tragic death of Kyler Gatica, a 16-year-old student at Mount Juliet High School who was killed in a multi-vehicle car crash. Gatica and his family were returning from a Florida vacation when the accident occurred on Interstate 840 East in Rutherford County, WKRN reported.
Gatica's classmates at Mount Juliet High School shared their grief publicly, with one student, Jackson Sanders, revealing to WKRN, "He was my best friend," and noting how "It’s hit really hard," but also acknowledging the unity in the community. Students and friends gathered over the weekend to honor Gatica's memory by painting his school parking spot, a senior-year ritual extended to him posthumously, as NewsChannel 5 reported.
An outpouring of love and tributes echoed through the community as Kyler's parents, Stephanie and Matthew Gatica, spoke to NewsChannel 5 about their son’s impact. "He is the center of our world, and he was going to do just great things," said Matthew Gatica, remembering Kyler as the "gentle giant," who embodied love and kindness. Stephanie Gatica courageously stated her intent to honor her son's life, "There wasn’t anybody that knew him better than me.”
Amidst statements of loss and the shared burden of grief, a candlelight vigil was planned to celebrate Gatica's influence and spirit. “We knew we had a special boy inside of our house, but we had no idea what kind of impact that he had on people that were strangers and that we are so incredibly proud of him,” Stephanie Gatica said, per WSMV., highlighting the deep sense of pride in his legacy. The vigil, held at the high school, provided a space for classmates and neighbors to come together in mourning and recollection.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident, but the community is focused on supporting each other and the Gatica family. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family and honor Kyler's memory. The hashtag #BeAKyler is being used to promote kindness in his memory, according to NewsChannel 5.
