The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating a tragic event that ended with the death of 25-year-old Alpha Oumar Kake, following a hit-and-run crash caused by a driver who fled an attempted traffic stop. The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 31, has been an ongoing concern for MPD's Internal Affairs Division and Major Crash Investigations Unit.

According to a press release by the MPD, the chain of events began when a Second District officer patrolling the 1600 block of K Street, Northwest, spotted a vehicle without its headlights on. After the officer attempted to stop the vehicle and turned on their siren, the car continued at a low speed, eventually accelerating and striking Kake, who was riding a moped and had the right of way via a green light.

Despite immediate medical attention and transport to a local hospital by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Kake passed away on Tuesday after efforts to save his life failed. The young man hailed from Temple Hills, MD, and the incident has spurred the police to ask for the public's assistance to identify and locate the driver who is responsible for his death, as detailed by the Metropolitan Police Department.

As per District law, the MPD will be releasing the body-worn camera footage related to the crash. In the meantime, they are reaching out to anyone whom has information about the incident to come forward. Tips can be phoned in at (202) 727-9099 or sent via text to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
