Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz alongside 50 faculty and administrators kicked off an ambitious three-day journey across Michigan, dubbed as the inaugural Spartan Bus Tour. Embarking on this venture, Guskiewicz aims to "build community connections, showcase MSU’s statewide impact and strengthen MSU’s commitment to education, research, outreach and extension," as mentioned in The Detroit News. The tour starts in Mount Pleasant and is set to cover 15 diverse stops including businesses, research centers, and cultural sites over three days.
The WLNS report highlighted the comprehensive itinerary plan, where MSU's Vice Provost of University outreach and engagement, Dr. Kwesi Brookins, expressed the two-way communicative nature of the tour. Among the scheduled stops are the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center in Traverse City and the Amish-owned M&R Pickling in Le Roy. The team also plans to visit the Kellogg Biological Station to showcase long-term trials in biology, agriculture, and ecology.
President Guskiewicz acknowledged the dual objectives this tour represents. He stated "It’s for the faculty and staff to get out there and see those communities and learn from each of the stops. And it’s also to show Michiganders out in those communities that this is a proudly public university that is solving some of the grand challenges of our time right here in the Great Lakes State," according to Mason County Press. One anticipated visit on the tour is the Grand Rapids Innovation Park, a hub where healthcare professionals use advanced technology, like the nation's first total-body PET/CT scanner, to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The excursion will also engage with the state's rich heritage and outdoor wonders. Participants will visit the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways to honor Michigan's Native American heritage and bask in the natural beauty of spots like Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The Spartan Bus Tour is expected to create a stronger bond between the university and the various facets of the Michigan community by directly showcasing the impact and reach of MSU's involvement in the state.
