As the general election approaches with an air charged by political contention, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners has taken a moment to spotlight those who run the gears of our democratic machine: election workers. According to Multnomah County, Monday, Nov. 4, Election Hero Day has been proclaimed, an acknowledgment of the labor involved in orchestrating elections amidst the spread of misinformation.
In light of the challenges of misinformation, the county's Elections Division is preparing for a notable November election, which features a shift to ranked-choice voting for city contests, as reported by Multnomah County. These preparations come amidst a national climate brimming with skepticism and false claims about the election process.
Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson commended the election workers, valuing their role in ensuring "fair, accurate, accessible and transparent elections." Pederson highlighted the collaborative efforts with law enforcement to provide a safe voting environment and protect the integrity of the election, detailed in a statement by Multnomah County.
Amidst the heavy lifting to prepare for the city's pioneering ranked-choice voting election, efforts were made to implement the nation's first test hand count for multi-winner ranked-choice voting contests, as Paty Vasquez Pacheco, the bilingual translation coordinator, mentioned during a presentation. This is in addition to the Voting Center Express located in Gresham, which eases access for voters east of Interstate 205 by providing service in multiple languages.
As elections draw near, the county board reasserts its commitment to the integrity of the electoral system, encouraging voters to seek credible sources for election information.
