The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is intensifying its efforts to apprehend a suspect linked to a fatal altercation in East Nashville. As per details shared by the department, the incident took place on South 5th Street and Russell Street on Monday, Oct. 21, resulting in the death of 59-year-old James Sutton. The MNPD has distributed images captured from surveillance cameras that show a man they believe to be responsible for the violent encounter. Following the attack, Sutton, suffering from critical head and spinal injuries, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he later died.
After initially being misled by the situation to think it was a hit-and-run, authorities have now established that Sutton was never struck by a vehicle. A blurry video taken by a nearby camera depicted the man shoving Sutton to the ground. According to an initial report about the incident, officers responded to what was believed to be a hit-and-run crash, which was later classified as a homicide, as reported by WKRN.
In a statement obtained by WSMV, local resident John Hayes expressed his disbelief over the brutality that unraveled so close to home. "I walk around her a lot with my dog, and I’ve never had anything happen to me. I’ve never seen anything crazy like that," Hayes said.
The MNPD is urging anyone with information about the suspect's identity or whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Callers have the option to remain anonymous and might be eligible for a $5,000 cash reward in homicide cases, as reiterated by FOX17. The chilling effect of this unexpected tragedy has left community members like Hayes heartbroken, acknowledging that while they have never felt threatened before, the current situation has indeed changed perceptions. "It’s tough to lose somebody like that. I’ve never really been threatened or anything, so I felt like I was generally pretty safe and walk during daylight hours. I’m concerned for other people living nearby," Hayes told WSMV.
The MNPD continues to search for the man in the surveillance pictures released and hopes that public assistance will lead to a swift resolution of the case. East Nashville residents, meanwhile, hold Sutton and his family in their thoughts as they grapple with the sudden loss and the search for answers unfolds.
