As we delve into the ongoing issue of firearms theft in Nashville, the Police Department has issued a stark reminder to vehicle owners: lock your doors, and secure your valuables. This advisory comes in light of a concerning statistic showing that a vast majority of guns stolen in the area thus far in 2024 were pilfered from unsecured vehicles. According to the Nashville Police Department, out of the total 965 guns reported stolen this year in Davidson County, a startling 702 were taken from automobiles. The figure translates to an alarming 72% and underscores a dire need for preventive measures by car owners.
Last year at this same time, 959 guns had been reported stolen from vehicles, which alarmingly points to a trend that remains all too unchanged. Vehicles are an apparent target, not only for the firearms left inside but as accompanying sites to car theft. The MNPD’s initiative introduced in February to curb such transgressions has led to 851 arrests, as well as the recovery of 445 stolen vehicles and 160 stolen firearms, yet the problem persists.
The theft of firearms from vehicles has wider implications, often leading to weapons falling into the hands of criminals and being used in further offenses. The Nashville Police Department notes, "Just like guns taken from vehicles, these stolen autos are also routinely involved in criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies." Incidents of vehicle theft have been exacerbated by owners leaving keys in the car or making them easily accessible, compounding the issue and presenting criminals with crime-ready tools.
