In an effort to enhance safety in schools within the Navajo Nation, a collective of leaders from public safety, education, and family services has introduced a robust online portal. Named Operation Diné School Safety (ODSS), the initiative offers a single point of access to resources aimed at protecting young Diné students. The new platform, a collaboration between the Navajo Department of Diné Education and the Navajo Department of Health – Public Health Emergency Preparedness, features tools like a reporting hotline, an anonymous threat submission form, and trauma support resources, as per an announcement on the Navajo Nation's official website.

The surge in threats and actual incidents of violence in schools has prompted this concerted response. Dr. Ferlin Clark, the incident commander for ODSS with the DODE School-Community Safety Task Force, emphasized the inevitability of such events, saying, "It’s not a matter of if it’s going to happen, it’s a matter of when it’s going to happen," as reported by the Navajo Nation's Presidential Office. The task force strongly promotes the community approach, triggering the “If you see something, say something” principle amongst students, their guardians, and educators.

With concerns over the digital playground just as urgent, the task force is pressing for more proactive parental supervision. Interventions into a child’s social media activities are not only about curating a healthier online environment, but also about comprehending underlying causes of troubling behavior, including the transmission of threats online.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren hailed the students willing to raise alarms and the concerted efforts of the initiative, he told the Navajo Nation's official website, "As a father, I understand the unsettling feeling of hearing about school threats. We must work together to ensure the safety of our communities and children."
