In a recent disclosure by the City of New Bedford Police Department, an individual with a history of criminal activity was taken into custody earlier this week. Detectives working in the South End of the city were performing surveillance when they were tipped off about Guilherme "Gilly" Jalo, 23, allegedly carrying a firearm in the County St. bar district. A search following their encounter with Jalo at a bar resulted in the seizure of a firearm and his arrest.
According to the New Bedford Police Department, Jalo, of 106 Bullard Street, was found in possession of a Lorcin L380 firearm, which was loaded with seven 9mm caliber rounds. Upon inspection, the firearm had a defaced serial number. The charges against him include carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammo without an FID card, and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.
Earlier in August, Jalo was among fifteen individuals arrested in a crackdown targeting narcotics activities in the area. This pattern of run-ins with the law strengthens the narrative of a district besieged by persistent crime. As per the New Bedford Police, Jalo had previously been charged with the sale of crack cocaine and had attempted to evade arrest by providing a false name to an officer. With the latest arrest, Jalo's portfolio of legal troubles now encompasses seven open cases.
The operation, which has sparked conversations about public safety and recidivism, was led by Detectives Emily Pacheco and Matthew Couture. "I'm thankful that detectives were able to intercept this firearm before it could be used in an act of violence," stated Chief Paul Oliveira in a post on the New Bedford Police Department's page. Oliveira also expressed disappointment at Jalo's release back onto the streets and extended his sympathy to the residents and business owners in the County St. bar area.
