Charlotte has recently welcomed a new fire recruit with a story that's both harrowing and uplifting. Gerard Singleton, the latest addition to the Charlotte Fire Department, has fulfilled a childhood dream of becoming a firefighter—a passion that traces its roots back to his formative years and has been strengthened through personal loss.
Singleton's resolve to don the firefighter uniform was significantly tested by the Charleston 9 tragedy in 2007, when nine firefighters perished while combating a fire in Charleston, South Carolina. This event profoundly impacted his family, prompting his parents to encourage him to seek higher education first. In a statement obtained by the City of Charlotte, Singleton remarked, "A big tragedy happened in Charleston. Of course, the Charleston 9." He heeded his parents' advice and pursued a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, yet the desire to fight fires remained.
His journey into firefighting began with his experiences at the North Charleston Fire Department, which provided a broad range of experience and a solid grounding in essential firefighter skills. He later seized the opportunity to join the Charlotte Fire Department, which he described as "stepping up to the big leagues" due to the larger scale of operations compared to North Charleston. "So far, it's been amazing. I learned so much , they put so much more stuff in my tool bag that I learned here," Singleton said, as per the press release from the City of Charlotte.
Amid Singleton's professional growth and training, tragedy struck again with the loss of his father during his time in recruit school, a month into the program. Singleton recalled the supportiveness of his classmates during this period, highlighting, "My classmates, they came and supported me. They actually came to my father's funeral. It was great to have them with me, a very loving experience." According to the City of Charlotte, the camaraderie and encouragement from his peers have been crucial to his ability to cope and move forward.
Today, Singleton stands on the cusp of his firefighting career, embodying the perseverance and determination that has driven him since childhood. His path to Charlotte Fire has been punctuated by study, practical experience, and profound personal experiences, all of which he carries forward as he steps into his role to serve the community. Singleton concludes, echoing his enduring commitment, "It's a great experience in my life so far," as mentioned by the City of Charlotte.
