New delays hit North Rampart Street construction as the lakebound traffic closure from Canal Street to Iberville Street is extended through November 11. The extension comes amid unanticipated setbacks during the roadway restoration component of the Hotel Collapse Site Rehabilitation Project, according to a recent announcement by the City of New Orleans.
Originally scheduled to be lifted earlier, the new timeline stipulates that vehicles will be rerouted to Basin Street until the completion of the roadwork. The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has adapted to the change by substituting bus service for the 46-Rampart-Loyola streetcar line, an adjustment aimed at maintaining transit operations through the affected region. The city's advisory mentions the importance of safety, as efforts to guide drivers and pedestrians around the construction zone continue with visible measures such as signage, barrels, and fencing.
As part of a broader rehabilitation effort, the project includes upgrades to waterline and drainage systems as well as the restoration of pavement and sidewalks across several streets in the vicinity. Workers are on site from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the project is set to reach completion in January 2025, weather permitting.
Commuters and residents in the area should plan for additional travel time and pay attention to detour directions. Maps detailing the reroutes affect Basin Street and surrounding areas, are intended to assist those navigating through the construction.
