The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans has issued a boil water advisory for the entire West Bank of the city. This precautionary measure was implemented following a sudden drop in water pressure that, officials say, was due to a pump failure. According to WWLTV, pressures fell below the safety threshold of 20 pounds per square inch. The board has confirmed that pump operations have returned to normal, but the advisory remains in effect until further notice.
As the community waits for the all-clear, SWBNO has instructed residents to properly boil their tap water for at least one minute before consumption or to use bottled water. The necessity of following these precautions extends to various daily activities, such as cooking, drinking, and oral hygiene. It is important to remember that most kitchen filters are not equipped to eliminate harmful bacteria or viruses; thus, boiling water is recommended even if a filtration system is installed. As reported by Fox 8, officials stressed the importance of this measure, particularly for those with compromised immune systems.
Residents are also cautioned against the usage of ice produced from unboiled tap water and encouraged to empty ice makers once the advisory lifts. While activities like bathing, showering, and doing laundry are generally considered safe, NOLA.com reports that the board advises caution to avoid ingesting water during these processes. Additionally, sponge-bathing babies and small children are suggested until the advisory is officially withdrawn.
SWBNO is actively monitoring the situation and will notify the public when the boil water advisory is safely to be lifted. Residents who have concerns or are encountering water-related issues can contact the Sewerage and Water Board at 504-52-WATER.
