An incident at New Richmond High School led to a brief soft lockdown yesterday when a ninth-grade student allegedly became combative and attempted to assault a school resource officer, according to WLWT. The altercation occurred at the high school on Bethel-New Richmond Road around 11 a.m. It involved the student making statements about assaulting the officer and taking a fighting stance.
The situation escalated when the student, after punching lockers, tried to punch the School Resource Officer (SRO). The officer, who sustained minor injuries in the process, was able to take the 14-year-old into custody, per the Clermont County Sheriff's Office. The student was then taken to Children's Hospital for a mental health evaluation, the necessity of which suggests a troubled backdrop that needs addressing, FOX19 reported.
The lockdown at the school was lifted around 11:30 a.m., allowing students to continue their school day as scheduled. In the aftermath of the confrontation, the sheriff's office has charged the student with felony assault of a police officer. The student has also been suspended pending disciplinary processes, LOCAL12 confirmed.
