Newton County has a new achievement as Commissioner Alana Sanders, representing District 3, recently received a Lifelong Learning Academy certificate. This commendation, awarded by the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) in Athens, recognizes Sanders' skills in citizen engagement and economic development. This is Sanders' third governmental certification.
The ceremony, part of the 2024 ACCG Legislative Leadership Conference held at The Classic Center in Athens-Clarke County. "I am honored to receive this certification in Citizen Engagement from the ACCG Lifelong Learning Academy," Sanders said, in a statement obtained by the Newton County's official website. "This achievement reflects my commitment to enhancing my skills to better serve the citizens of Newton County."
The ACCG and the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government have partnered for over two decades to help county officials enhance their governance knowledge. This collaboration provides leaders with both fundamental and specialized knowledge needed to address modern civic challenges. The Lifelong Learning Academy was developed with input from county commissioners to ensure the curriculum's relevance and practicality.
Dave Wills, ACCG's Executive Director, emphasized the Academy's role in preparing county officials to more effectively confront public service challenges. "County leaders who prioritize furthering their education are better equipped to address those challenges and are assets to their communities," Wills told the Newton County. With its diverse and periodically updated courses, the Academy aims to keep county officials well-equipped to respond to the evolving needs of their constituents.
