A grand jury in Oahu has charged 44-year-old Gibran Copeland with second-degree murder in the death of 50-year-old Christina Baca. Baca's body was found in a Manoa storm drain on September 13, marking the start of a serious investigation, according to KHON2.
Copeland is accused of fatally shooting Baca, multiple times in the head, torso, and limbs. The incident stemmed from a previous intimate, yet turbulent relationship between the two, which had been marred by domestic violence. This indictment, discussed in a statement obtained by Hawaii News Now, was delivered without the provision of bail, with Copeland currently detained at the Oahu Community Correctional CenterOahu Community Correctional Center or OCCC.
Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm highlighted the broader societal issue in a statement saying, "This tragic case highlights the urgent need to address domestic violence in our community. These acts of violence have no place in Hawaii, and we are committed to securing a conviction in this case," a statement obtained by KHON2. The nature of this crime puts Copeland at risk of receiving a life sentence with the possibility of parole, an outcome that amplifies the gravity of the accusations.
Given his history as a repeat offender, Copeland may face extended sentencing, potentially leading to life imprisonment without parole. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Dwane Tegman will lead the case against him, and Copeland remains presumed innocent until proven guilty as he awaits trial.
