Attorney General Dave Yost opened the first Law Enforcement Training Symposium (LETS) in Sandusky, addressing over 500 attendees. Yost honored local law enforcement and emphasized the significance of their role in society. "You are the bedrock — the foundation of our society — and I want you to know that the people of Ohio appreciate and value you," Yost said at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, as reported by the Ohio Attorney General's news release.

The event, which occurred yesterday and today, showcased a reimagined approach to police training, reflecting the AG's vision for future-proofing law enforcement skills. Among the innovative offerings were immersive virtual reality experiences and courses in situational decision-making and crisis de-escalation. LETS also provided officers the convenience of completing their mandatory continuing professional training in one location. These updates were based on the recommendations from Yost’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Future of Police Training.

The symposium featured keynote speakers who discussed ethics, leadership, and decision-making, along with 27 training workshops. As part of the procedural overhaul, four specialized career tracks were introduced to optimize the time law enforcement officers spend training. "It’s important that we’re giving them what they want and what they need," Attorney General Dave Yost told participants, underlining the attorney general's commitment to equip police forces with necessary skills and knowledge.

Yost also presented two officers with the first Exemplary Response Award at the Distinguished Law Enforcement Awards dinner. Officers Kyle Cunningham and Marc Merriweather were recognized for their extraordinary efforts in rescuing civilians. These presentations, along with others, such as the Victoria Allen Civilian Leadership Award and the Valor Award, highlighted the commendable deeds of individuals in Ohio's law enforcement. Footage of the award ceremonies and the officers' reactions can be found on the Ohio Attorney General's official website.

To supplement the on-site events, the Ohio Attorney General's Office has made available still photos of the award winners and a b-roll of the event highlights and workshops. Those interested can request the photos by emailing [email protected].
