The early voting period in Oklahoma began on a high note as substantial crowds of voters packed polling places, causing long wait times but also indicating strong civic engagement. In Oklahoma County, lines on the first day wound around buildings and stretched for miles, with some prospective voters enduring waiting periods upwards of two hours to cast their ballots. As reported by FOX 25, early voters like Libbie Young commented on the unexpected wait, "I've been in line for about an hour and a half, and I'm almost halfway."
Despite frustrations with the wait times and line lengths, many voters expressed a sense of responsibility for participating in the electoral process. Kayla Denson, having waited for 20 to 30 minutes, told Oklahoma Voice, "This is an important time for our country and we have a responsibility to vote." Concerns over long lines and safety on Election Day motivated many to vote early, as relayed by Alexis Wade to Oklahoma Voice, reflecting apprehensions about the logistics of polling on November 5.
Cleveland County reported the highest turnout across the state, with 6,586 individuals casting their votes on the first day. The county offered four different early voting locations, more than any other in Oklahoma. This number starkly contrasted with Oklahoma and Tulsa Counties which provided only two early voting sites each, potentially contributing to the longer lines. According to News 4, Oklahoma State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax said, “Cleveland County, I think historically, if you go back, especially the last several years, they seem to have a population there that likes to vote early.”
Some voters conveyed dissatisfaction with the limited options for early voting venues, with several complaints arising about only two available spots in the Oklahoma County region. Early voting, which will continue through Saturday, is urged by state election officials who anticipate heavy turnout and consequent long lines, as per statements obtained by FOX 25.
