Authorities in San Bernardino County recently launched a successful sting operation deemed "Operation Smash & Grab," netting a significant haul of felony and misdemeanor arrests, along with the recovery of stolen goods. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, the weeks-long initiative spread over a span of two weeks from October 12 to October 25, 2024, targeted organized retail theft rings rampant in multiple shopping areas.
The combined efforts of several law enforcement agencies, including the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department – Gangs/Narcotics Division, Rancho Cucamonga Station, San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department, culminated in five felony arrests and 13 misdemeanor arrests. Moreover, the task force recovered stolen merchandise valued at $7,075.68. The series of thefts that sparked the operation often featured criminal crews engaging in various forms of theft and intimidation, negatively impacting the shopping experience and safety of local residents. A rise in such activity prompted the county's response last November, following a string of incidents involving robberies and vandalism.
Specific locations targeted in the operation included the retail districts of Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills. Authorities employed a mix of traditional and innovative investigative techniques to disrupt and dismantle the offending crews, striving to restore the lawful peace of the commercial environments. An element of the strategic approach involved the Sheriff’s Department receiving specially allocated funds from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to enhance crime suppression efforts and counter the quality-of-life issues plaguing the county.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department cited the importance of interagency cooperation in the fight against organized retail crime. “These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents,” said the Sheriff's Department in a statement underscoring the negative impact on the local community. The concerted action reflected a broader strategy to address retail theft and establish a sense of security among the citizens of the affected areas.
