Orange County Public Works has recently made strides towards enhancing pedestrian safety in the Wedgefield community, teaming up with the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) to illuminate Bancroft Boulevard. Spanning 3.5 miles, the Bancroft Boulevard Lighting Project completes a series of steps aimed at improving visibility for those on foot.
The initiative, funded by the County's Accelerated Transportation Safety Program, includes the recent installation of safety lighting at critical crosswalks and intersections that started in 2022. According to Orange County's newsroom, the project's latest phase was to finish roadway lighting from Nettleton St. to Starry St. The construction of sidewalks has been part of these efforts, lining the east side since 2016 and the west as of 2023.
Over the summer, Orange County installed new school signs with flashing beacons, along with new lights, as part of its safety measures to protect pedestrians for the school year. The Accelerated Transportation Safety Program's website offers resources for those interested in further information or seeking a comprehensive list of ongoing pedestrian safety projects.
