The approach of Hurricane Milton has prompted the National Weather Service in Melbourne to issue several warnings and advisories for the Orlando area and its environs. With the hurricane expected to strengthen into a major hurricane later today, "residents and visitors should be preparing for hurricane conditions across East Central Florida," as stated in the area forecast discussion released in the early hours of Monday morning.
A flood watch remains in effect through early Thursday, with bands of heavy rain poised to cause significant flooding throughout midweek. The National Weather Service alerts that "as Milton moves across the state, the risk for strong to damaging wind and a few tornadoes increases on Wednesday." Coastal areas are bracing for potentially hazardous conditions, with "battering surf and some coastal flooding" expected to begin along portions of the coast by late Wednesday night.
Maritime operations are also facing disruptions due to the incoming storm. A Small Craft Advisory remains in place until Tuesday evening. At the same time, onshore winds and building seas are forecasted to escalate from hazardous to very hazardous during the day on Wednesday with the approach of TC Milton, according to the marine section of the weather discussion. Vessels are warned of tropical storms and potential hurricane conditions by Wednesday night as Milton closes in on the central peninsula.
Hydrology concerns are also on the rise. The Saint Johns River near Astor is expected to reach Moderate Flood Stage sometime on Wednesday due to the anticipated heavy rainfall. According to the same forecast discussion, additional points along the river may see rises later this week. Residents and those in flood-prone regions have been advised to remain vigilant and keep abreast of the latest flood warnings and advisories.
With the discussion warning of MVFR/IFR CIGs continuing through the TAF period, aviation will not remain untouched by Milton's impact. Flight operations are set to contend with adverse weather conditions throughout the period, with the forecast including scattered to widespread showers and potential reductions in visibility. Those traveling by air are encouraged to check with carriers for any delays or cancellations, as rain and wind can be expected to intensify with Milton's imminent arrival.
