Thousands of Illinois residents might want to closely watch their mail for the next few days. According to the Illinois State Treasurer's office, nearly 140,000 people are due to receive checks made out to them as part of the latest round of the state's Enhanced Money Match program. This initiative is designed to automatically return unclaimed money to Illinois residents, preventing the necessity to individually file claims for these funds. As reported by NBC Chicago, the bulk of these checks are valued between $50 and $100, summing up to an aggregate of $13.2 million.
Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs emphasized the legitimacy of this windfall during a morning update, stating, "If you are home, if you see a check in the mail from the State Treasurer's office, it's not a scam. All you have to do is open that envelope and cash that check." These comments highlight a typical concern among recipients, who might initially question the validity of receiving money unexpectedly. To further ease concerns, letters were previously sent to inform residents of the forthcoming payments, as noted by CBS News Chicago.
The Enhanced Money Match program functions by cross-referencing state data with the State Treasurer's database of unclaimed property. Following confirmation of names and mailing addresses, the Treasurer's office proceeds to quickly issue these checks. Frerichs' office has stressed the importance of not only receiving but also depositing these checks to take advantage of funds owed.
The aim of this program extends beyond clearing the books; it seeks to provide a modicum of financial relief. According to Frerichs, "Returning this money to its rightful owners will help make life a little bit easier for people. At a time when we are all dealing with higher prices, it can pay for a couple bags of groceries or maybe a fill-up or two at the pump." While the program automatically includes individuals with cash owed, it does not encompass multi-party cash holdings or physical items like the contents of bank safe deposit boxes, CBS News Chicago explains.
For those curious about potential unclaimed money, the I-Cash database remains searchable online at the state's dedicated website. In addition to this tool, the Comptroller's website also maintains a record of nearly 150,000 uncashed checks amounting to over $50 million. Illinoisians are encouraged to visit these resources to discover if they are owed money, whether from the Money Match program or other unclaimed properties.
