In response to the impending storm in Palm Beach County, local government and non-profit organizations have banded together to secure the well-being of its vulnerable populations, prioritizing the homeless and those facing financial hardships. Initiatives have been rapidly deployed to provide shelter for those at risk, which includes disabled veterans and families recently without homes due to evictions.

Beginning at noon today, Palm Tran has implemented a special bus service designated to transport residents to various storm shelters. This service is scheduled to operate until 5 p.m., with stops at strategic locations including the Delray Beach Library, and John Prince Park, among others. As reported by CBS12, Dr. James Green, the Director of the Palm Beach County Community Services Department underscores the gravity of the situation, "We have families who are sleeping in their cars, and it’s really important for them to know that there’s a place to go."

The county shelters an extensive number of unhoused individuals, including those families with children who find the cost of living and rent beyond their financial reach. As per CW34, collaboration extends through various organizations and local governmental bodies, such as The Lord’s Place and the municipal jurisdictions of West Palm Beach and Delray Beach, to disseminate information about the transport service.

As the storm draws nearer, with anticipation of increased rainfall and intensified winds, Mayor Maria Sachs has emphasized the importance of this complimentary transport service. "With the flooding in our streets, it’s probably a good idea for a lot of folks not to rely on their car to drive to a shelter," she stated to CBS12 and CW34. The county's aim is to secure the shelters against the hurricane, and also to ensure that they serve as a safe haven for the county's residents. For additional assistance or inquiries, residents can contact the Emergency Operations Center at (561) 712-6400.
