Motorists traveling near the border of Tennessee and North Carolina can look forward to the partial reopening of Interstate 40 in the coming weeks. The WVLT reports that the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) plans to restore traffic flow on a key route, though with some limitations. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between the Tennessee/North Carolina state line and mile marker 447, utilizing the westbound lanes.

TDOT's Mark Nagi relayed that while I-40 will be accessible again for local Tennessee traffic, there is as yet no date set for when the entire interstate will reopen in North Carolina. This follows the destructive impact of Hurricane Helene that necessitated the closure of sections of I-40 due to significant washouts. Nagi specified, "Over the next two weeks, TDOT will be working to return traffic to this roadway, one lane in each direction between the Tennessee/North Carolina state line and mile marker 447, Hartford Road," as outlined in a statement obtained by WVLT.
The timeline for these repairs comes amidst extended closures affecting both westbound and eastbound travelers. Currently, the interstate is closed to westbound drivers at Exit 447 and to eastbound at Exit 440. According to Knox News, the catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Helene instigated a sequence of events that led to the closure, with a mudslide on the North Carolina side causing a partial highway collapse. Cooperation between the Tennessee and North Carolina transportation departments is ongoing to fully assess the extent of damage inflicted.
While repairs are underway, alternate routes have been suggested for those needing to travel between the two states. The WJHL notes that TDOT has recommended an alternative path: I-81 North to Virginia followed by I-77 South into North Carolina.
