Recent surveillance footage from school buses in Peabody and Salem has revealed a stark pattern of illegal driving maneuvers, showcasing numerous instances where drivers ignored stop signs on school buses, endangering the lives of children attempting to embark or disembark. This discovery aligns with concerns expressed by Salem School Superintendent Steve Zrike who, in an interview with Boston 25 News, emphasized the severity of the issue stemming from drivers disrespecting school bus stop arms.
The cameras installed by Bus Patrol America on Salem school buses documented around 1,100 violations since September. In Peabody, seven buses equipped with these cameras caught 700 drivers failing to halt for stopped school buses, as reported by CBS Boston. The consistent bypassing of these safety measures poses a significant threat, with Salem Police Captain John Burke warning that failing to stop for a school bus stop sign is singularly dangerous.
Addressing the gravity of the situation, Superintendent Zrike and Salem Police appreciate the shocking evidence as a tool to press for necessary legislative adjustments. Efforts are underway to petition Beacon Hill lawmakers to permit law enforcement the use of this video footage as a basis for issuing citations to violators. "There has to be more enforcement. Our number one priority is getting kids to and from school safely. Obviously, they can’t learn if they can’t get to school," Zrike affirmed in a statement signifying the widespread concerns within the school districts, as noted by Boston 25 News.
Concurrently, Massachusetts legislators are considering a proposal that would allow for the adoption of camera systems to monitor and enforce the rules concerning the illegal passing of school buses. Peabody Police Captain Scott Richards highlighted to CBS Boston the limitations faced by law enforcement in actively policing every bus route and expressed his support for a law that would authorize citations based on video evidence. This initiative is in response to the alarming findings from a study by BusPatrol that showed a disturbing frequency of unsafe driving behaviors around children disembarking school buses.
With legislators set to review the proposed changes, communities hope for prompt action to ensure the safe passage of children to and from school. The video evidence compiled by Bus Patrol America highlights the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, as the lack of enforcement puts our most precious commuters at risk.
