FORT COLLINS — A pedestrian was killed in a traffic collision on the evening of October 15, in Fort Collins. According to the City of Fort Collins, the incident occurred around 9:50 pm at the intersection of East Harmony Road and South Lemay Avenue. The male victim was fatally struck by multiple vehicles, all of which remained at the scene following the collision.
The Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team has taken over the investigation to piece together the moments leading to the tragic event. Initial reports from witnesses suggest that the pedestrian was crossing East Harmony Road against a green light for traffic. The police are currently working to confirm these details. The victim was reportedly wearing dark-colored clothing, and an aspect of the ongoing investigation is whether alcohol played a part in the pedestrian.
"Unfortunately, pedestrian related crashes continue to increase across the state, and Fort Collins is no exception to that," Sergeant David Lindsay, who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team, expressed concern for pedestrian safety. "To ensure everyone's safety, it’s crucial for drivers to be attentive at pedestrian crossings, and for pedestrians to adhere to crosswalk signals at all times," he added, as obtained by the City of Fort Collins.
The investigation led to prolonged road closures, with the intersection in question being closed for around 4 ½ hours as the scene was processed. Fort Collins Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Officer Brandon Barnes at (970) 221-6540. The identity, along with the cause and manner of death of the decedent, will be released by the Larimer County Coroner following the notification of next of kin.
