A woman in her early-60s was struck and killed by an SUV in downtown Jacksonville last night as she crossed North Main Street, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reported. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the 900 block of North Main Street. First Coast News noted that according to Sergeant Hungerford, the woman was walking westbound, midblock and just north of State Street, when she was hit by the northbound vehicle.
The driver of the Ford SUV, a man in his mid-30s, stayed at the scene to call authorities and request assistance. "The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with detectives. There were no indicators of impairment," JSO stated, as per the account obtained by Action News Jax. Hungerford informed First Coast News that this incident marked the 124th traffic fatality within Duval County in the current year, and the 33rd involving a pedestrian.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident earlier this year, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office continues to search for a hit-and-run suspect. According to News4Jax, the incident involved a black SUV that struck a pedestrian on Feb. 8 in the 200 block of West Union Street and fled the scene. JSO urges anyone with information to contact them or call First Coast Crime Stoppers, where they could be eligible for a reward of up to $3,000.
After responding to the scene and pronouncing the woman dead, first responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department could only offer finality to an evening that had ended in tragedy. Those seeking to assist in the February incident investigation, JSO can be reached at 904-630-0500, or through the email at [email protected], and anonymous tips can be submitted to First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS, as reminded by Action News Jax.
