A tragic incident occurred this morning in San Francisco's Cole Valley/Parnassus Heights neighborhood, where a man was hit and killed by a dump truck near the UCSF Parnassus campus, according to authorities. ABC7 News reports that the collision happened at approximately 8:44 a.m. at Parnassus Avenue and Stanyan Street. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and his identity has not yet been made available to the public.
The driver of the truck involved in the accident remained at the site of the collision, and impairment from substances such as drugs or alcohol is not believed to be a factor, KTVU reported. Detailed overhead footage by SkyFox indicated the dump truck's proximity to the accident scene, yet it remains uncertified whether the truck busied itself with the ongoing UCSF construction project nearby.
The specific circumstances of the accident are under investigation. Still, early findings from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) indicate that the man was within the boundaries of the crosswalk when the truck struck him, as informed by the inspection of the traffic signals in the vicinity. Police believe there was a green light at the crosswalk during this unforeseen catastrophe.
Urgent medical assistance was deployed. However, the man was declared dead before potential salvation might grace him. The truck driver, who has not been accused of wrongdoing, cooperated fully with police inquiries at the scene, according to ABC7 News. It appears the vehicle was in the process of making a right turn on Parnassus Avenue and did not see the pedestrian crossing the street.
The SFPD is urging anyone with information about the accident to come forward and provide assistance in the ongoing investigation by calling the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444 or sending a tip via text message to TIP411 with SFPD at the start of the message.
