In Philadelphia, the PHL Taking Care of Business (PHL TCB) Clean Corridors Program has made a significant impact on the city's commercial areas. The Department of Commerce-backed initiative has expanded its cleaning efforts to 129 local commercial corridors, funding community-based nonprofits and minority-owned cleaning companies to keep the streets well-maintained.
Stephanie Michel, representing the Olney Community Collaborative funded by the program, highlights the local efforts, "We have a team of five from the neighborhood who do an excellent job maintaining a cleaner N. Fifth Street business district," she told phila.gov. The cleaning ambassadors take care of the streets and also bring the community closer together, according to Michel, who appreciates the employment opportunities the program has brought to Olney.
Michel emphasized to phila.gov the social impact of the TCB program, stating, "Our TCB crew loves Olney and are happy to serve our neighborhood." The initiative creates local jobs and fosters a sense of pride and collaboration within the community. The Olney Community Collaborative serves a diverse population along North 5th Street, using the TCB program to also support local economic growth and community engagement.
Michel values the relationships and networking facilitated by the TCB program, saying, "The PHL TCB Pep Rally has been a highlight for us over the past few years." This sentiment echoes the program's broader role in in community development, according to phila.gov. In Olney, the program is seen as a connection amongst residents and local businesses.
The TCB initiative also celebrates and acknowledges the hard work of its ambassadors. In Michel's words, "This recognition makes a significant difference and serves as a powerful motivator." Michel also points out the assistance provided by local governance, "I truly appreciate the communication, investment and meaningful efforts to support local neighborhood organizations that I’ve observed over the years," she explained in an interview with phila.gov.
