The Phoenix Police Department has been thrust into the public eye once again following the release of a Critical Incident Briefing video detailing the events leading up to, and including, an in-custody death that occurred on October 13, 2024; as per the briefing, the situation unfolded after officers were dispatched to a reported shooting involving a U-Haul truck at the intersection of 49th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, according to information from the Phoenix Police Department.

The 911 caller had described a harrowing scene where a man was shot in the passenger cab of a U-Haul and identified the suspect, now in a grey Nissan Sentra, in the vicinity, it was during the police's arrival that they observed a man in dark clothing moving from the U-Haul to the Nissan and refused to yield to the police, initiating a high-speed chase reaching speeds over 90 mph as officers with blaring sirens tried to intervene releasing a video to that effect which can be viewed with discretion at Phoenix Police Newsroom.

When the Nissan came to a halt at the lot of a nearby drug store on 99th Avenue and Thunderbird Boulevard, the situation escalated quickly as the suspect brandished a firearm when approached by officers, and although one officer discharged his weapon it was the man's own hand that turned the firearm upon himself, the medical examiner confirmed the self-inflicted gunshot was the cause of death; meanwhile, back at the original scene, another victim was discovered deceased in the U-Haul, subsequently linking the handgun found with the suspect to the shooting.

The involved officer, with about seven years on duty, hails from the Cactus Park Precinct and is now under review as both an internal and a criminal investigation takes place, the results of which the Maricopa County Attorney's Office will pore over in due course, the police department insists that judgments regarding the conformity of the officers’ actions with department policy and the law will be withheld until the finalization of these inquiries as stated in the official briefing.
