Phoenix residents, say goodbye to the annual bulk trash calendar, The City of Phoenix Public Works Department has rolled out an appointment-based system, marking the end of the old quarterly pick-up routine. In a new effort to streamline city trash services, Phoenix officials are asking residents to call in or book online to make their bulk trash collection appointments, a move designed for convenience and efficiency.
While the new program offers the promise of personalization, it requires residents to be proactive. Bulk items can no longer just appear curbside according to a preset citywide schedule; now, if you want your worn-out sofa or broken fridge hauled away, you'll need to hop on the phone or the web. According to a statement on the City of Phoenix website, customers can make their appointments through a dedicated helpline at 602-262-6251, or through the aforementioned online portal. For those living within community groups like HOAs, block watches, and other neighborhood organizations, a list of community-wide scheduled collection days is available for perusal and planning.
There are limits to keep in mind – for the remainder of 2024, residents are limited to one bulk trash appointment. From January 2025 onwards, however, the number increases to four per year. The guidelines dictate appointments must be made at least 3 business days prior, and bulky items cannot be placed outside earlier than seven days before the scheduled collection date. Collections begin as early as 6 am, so the city advises that piles be ready by 5:30 am on pick-up days.
Space too, is limited. Each appointment allows for disposal of up to ten cubic yards of trash, roughly the space of a small bedroom. For those times when trash exceeds limits, there are still options. A second appointment can be scheduled, or residents can transport up to one ton of trash monthly to city transfer stations free of charge – just remember to bring an ID and a city services bill.
Particular holidays mean a pause in service to preserve Phoenix's festive spirit. The city has set aside Halloween, along with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day as trash collection-free days, ensuring uninterrupted holiday celebrations. During these times, no appointments can be made, and no piles will disturb the joyous procession of children and families participating in these hallowed traditions.
