A young child in Phoenix is currently hospitalized after suffering a gunshot wound in what has been described by police as an accidental, self-inflicted incident. 12News reports that officers were summoned to a home northwest of Seventh and Southern Avenues around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, finding a frantic scene with multiple individuals outside the residence.

Upon their arrival, "During the chaotic scene, officers located a toddler with a gunshot wound," Phoenix Police said according to the 12News statement. Initially deemed life-threatening, the child's injures are now such that survival is expected. A person has been detained in connection with the shooting, though not yet publicly identified, and an investigation into the incident continues.

The toddler's prognosis includes expectations for recovery while one boy has been arrested in connection to the shooting. The suspect, who does not reside at the home where the incident took place, is accused of endangerment and illegal firearm possession as a minor, as per authorities cited by FOX 10 Phoenix.

Retired Phoenix Police Commander Jeffeory Hynes shared insights on the broader issue of firearms safety in homes, "Any time you touch a weapon, any time you leave a weapon out, it has to be seen as ready to go, that it's armed, it's in a position to fire," he explained to FOX 10 Phoenix. Post-incident, Hynes emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership and the necessity of secure storage to prevent such tragedies.

The larger conversation around gun safety in Arizona homes remains heightened following this incident. Previous efforts have been made to pass legislation, including Christian's Law, named after Christian Petillo, a 15-year-old boy who died due to an unsecured weapon in a friend's home. While the law proposed fines for unsecured firearms up to $1,000, it has yet to be enacted, leaving gun owners without a legal mandate to lock up their guns, but with the same moral and practical impetus to ensure their weapons pose no threat to curious children.
