Pierce County is setting a new standard in the approach to homelessness and medical care with the transformation of the Oasis Inn into a facility that will offer affordable housing and essential respite services. This landmark move comes through a collaboration spearheaded by the Low-Income Housing Institute (LIHI) with substantial financial backing from Pierce County Human Services (PCHS) and the Washington State Department of Commerce. As Pierce County announced, over $10 million was awarded to LIHI by PCHS back in January 2023 for a shelter project which culminated in the purchase of this hotel.

The Oasis Inn's conversion will result in 117 units dedicated to non-congregate emergency shelters and permanent supportive housing, featuring at least 51 units designed for medical respite services. The target population includes individuals currently experiencing homelessness, those escaping domestic violence, and those at high risk of homelessness. According to an announcement by Pierce County, the medical respite services are part of the larger initiative under the state’s Apple Health and Homes Program, aiming to synergize healthcare services with housing resources.

Heather Moss, the director of Pierce County Human Services, expressed the county's commitment to addressing the pressing needs in the region: “Pierce County Human Services is pleased to have been an initial investor in this latest project to bring additional short-term shelter and permanent supportive housing to Pierce County,” she said. Moss added, “The facility will also provide short-term medical respite for homeless individuals coming out of treatment or other health care facilities,” as stated by Pierce County.

This initiative aligns with Pierce County's Comprehensive Plan to End Homelessness, which highlights medical respite as a critical need in the community. The shelter promises comprehensive support including 24/7 staffing, case management, security, and medical services onsite. In addition, Community Health Care is set to offer health, dental, and behavioral health services. LIHI plans to have some clients move in during the ongoing renovations, as reported to Pierce County.
