The Pittsburgh City Council has recently earmarked $600,000 of federal COVID-19 relief funding for installing 11 new public restrooms throughout the city. The council members unanimously supported the move and acknowledged the need for more accessible and safe restroom facilities across Pittsburgh's neighborhoods. The plan includes placing the restrooms in key areas such as Mellon Square, Allegheny Commons, and South Side's The Color Park, among other destinations, with locations chosen for their current lack of public bathroom options, CBS News Pittsburgh reported.
Building on the success of the "Pittsburgh Potty Initiative" from last year, which introduced mobile bathrooms, the city is set to expand the initiative, taking the needs of all residents into account, including features like running water, heat, and technology that signals if an individual has been inside for an extended period, potentially requiring assistance. These facilities will be accessible to people with disabilities and operated using QR codes to unlock doors. Still, officials are also considering distributing key cards for individuals without smartphones, as TribLIVE has detailed.
These new installations, expected to spread out over the coming couple of years, will provide convenience and promote hygiene and safety in urban spaces. Councilwoman Barb Warwick echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of having these facilities readily available for city dwellers and visitors.
Further, the city braces for ideas on more permanent restroom solutions, while the current initiative is seen as an essential step in addressing the immediate necessity—the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership will undertake the responsibility for the cleaning and maintenance of these mobile restrooms, ensuring they remain a hygienic resource for the public, addressing a basic human concern that often goes overlooked, yet is crucial for the dignity and well-being of all who traverse the steel city, as put forth by Pittsburgh Chief Financial Officer Patrick Cornell as cited by TribLIVE.
